What Recent Film Deals Reveal About Territory Value Ahead of AFM
FilmTake Market Note

Recent acquisitions show how buyers are assembling rights across territories. The next question is what those commitments mean for your own film’s value.

From international sales supporting production economics to domestic and broader territorial acquisitions, October’s deals offer useful evidence ahead of AFM. Applying that evidence requires a closer look at the rights, release plans, and pricing assumptions behind each opportunity.

Industry discussion at TIFF The Market in Toronto

A film’s international rights can make a substantial contribution to its production economics before its domestic theatrical release. On October 19, CJ ENM reported that international sales revenue for Yeon Sang-ho’s Paradise Lost had exceeded its net production budget, with sales to 118 countries. The announcement came ahead of its October 21 opening in South Korea, following festival screenings in Toronto and Busan. [1]

That is a meaningful financial signal, although the announcement does not disclose individual territory prices, collection timing, or the deductions between sales revenue and producer receipts. It supports a specific conclusion about the film’s international sales performance, without establishing its eventual profitability.

Other October deals show different ways of securing distribution. Some combine several territories under one buyer. Others add individual markets to an existing sales campaign or secure domestic distribution while a film is still in postproduction. Together, they provide a useful starting point for the negotiations ahead.

One Buyer Can Represent Many Territory Decisions

Sony Pictures Classics’ October 16 acquisition of The Julia Set followed the film’s TIFF premiere. The agreement covers all rights in the United States and a substantial group of international markets, including the UK, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Australia, and New Zealand. Its regional coverage excludes Poland from Eastern Europe and Singapore from Asia. [2]

For a seller, an acquisition spanning several markets raises a valuation question: how does the combined offer compare with the credible alternatives for those territories? A single agreement may simplify execution, but its attractiveness still depends on price, payment terms, release obligations, and the value of rights retained elsewhere.

The more useful pricing question is whether the combined territory package reflects a premium for coordinated distribution or a discount against the seller’s expectations for individual markets. The undisclosed terms leave that question open.

Individual Territory Sales Build a Different Picture

On October 8, TrustNordisk announced that Vue Lumière had acquired UK and Ireland rights to May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown. It also reported recent agreements with buyers including Weltkino in Germany and Austria, Memento in France, and Karma Films in Spain. [3]

That approach assembles distribution through separate territorial commitments. Each buyer brings its own release strategy and revenue expectations. A seller evaluating the remaining markets needs to consider their individual potential, as well as the time and cost of completing the sales campaign.

The number of countries sold describes geographical reach. Assessing the financial contribution requires the amounts contracted, the rights granted, and the timing of payment. A broad sales footprint can be commercially valuable without revealing how much any one unsold territory should command.

The Sales Cycle Continues After the Market

Black Bear’s domestic deal for Honeymoon/Funeral provides a direct continuation of the Toronto sales cycle. Announced October 9, the acquisition followed the project’s launch at the inaugural TIFF market. MRC financed production, FilmNation handled worldwide sales, and the film had wrapped shooting in September. [4]

This is a different acquisition context from bidding on a completed festival film. The buyer is assessing the material available, the creative package, delivery expectations, and its intended audience. Those differences matter when selecting comparable transactions or estimating the advance a project might attract.

For sellers preparing for the next market, the useful question is what has changed since the last conversation. New footage, a clearer delivery date, or an additional distribution commitment may give a buyer more to evaluate. An unchanged asking price still needs support from the project’s commercial prospects.

AFM Adds an Audience Test to the Sales Conversation

The American Film Market runs November 10–15 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Market screenings are scheduled for November 10–13 at AMC Century City 15, directly across from the hotel. [5]

A new collaboration with AMC A-List and the B-List Movie Club will give selected films access to frequent moviegoers alongside industry attendees. The initiative is intended to provide audience response, while expanded screening options include premieres and slate presentations. [6]

For participating sellers, that response may help clarify positioning and support a discussion about the intended release. It remains evidence from a selected audience in Los Angeles. A distributor must still assess whether the film can reach its own audience at a viable acquisition and marketing cost.

The published program also addresses independent film financing, windows, and exhibitors moving into distribution. These subjects connect directly to the deals above: who acquires the rights, how the film reaches viewers, and which revenues support the commitment. [7]

Before AFM, buyers and sellers can strengthen their position by identifying available rights, selecting relevant advance comparisons, and examining the licensing income a release may support. These inputs help turn a promising meeting into a discussion about a price and terms that both sides can assess.

Put Pricing Evidence Behind the Next Offer

Public deal coverage helps identify active buyers and distribution strategies. Negotiating your own transaction requires more specific reference points: comparable advances, territory ranges, and licensing economics relevant to the project and rights under consideration.

FilmTake’s Global Screen Rights Report brings those sources of pricing intelligence together. The research supports analysis of an upfront acquisition or advance alongside the downstream licensing opportunities that may help sustain it.
